A cross-section of National Resistance Movement (NRM) members in Bushenyi district have petitioned the NRM National Chairperson, HE. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to rein in what they call “the unbecoming behavior” of their chairperson, Hajji Hassan Basajjabalaba
According to the petition dated 26th August, 2020, as seen by this website, the members accuse their person of failure to pray an impartial role during internal NRM party elections, disrespecting party leaders and candidates participating in party primary elections, openly involving himself in voter bribery while supporting a section of party candidates against others, Conducting open rallies in different areas with massive gatherings against the Presidential directives and Standard operating procedures as laid out by the ministry of health concerning the COVID 19 pandemic, financing illegal activities and undermining elected leaders, dividing the Muslim community, siege and closure of Basajabalaba Mosque, among others.
The members also accuse the Chairperson of refusing and failing to vote/endorse NRM leaders in the recent district delegate’s conferences during the recent party delegates’ conference that was held in Bushenyi district and promoting electoral violence in the district and “using hooligans to engage in violence against party candidates.”
“These actions and conduct are detrimental to good behavior, unity and continuity of our party and threatens our highly projected performance of our National Party Presidential Flag bearer and the NRM party in general.” The petition reads in part
The petitioners want President Museveni to call Hajji Basajjabalaba to order and stop him from “dividing the party” in Bushenyi district and also invoke the party constitutional provisions, so Basajjabalaba can be disciplined.
We would like therefore to pray that; As a National Party Chairperson, call our District Chairperson to order and refrain him from partial and selective participation in NRM primary elections as a leader for he is dividing our party….. Invoke the NRM constitutional provisions Schedule 4 Rule 5, paragraph (c) and to provide remedy for the gross harm and impunity so far caused to our party .
They also want the security agencies in Bushenyi district to “apprehend the criminal gangs under the District Chairman’s sponsorship.”
Retaliating their commitment towards building a strong party in Bushenyi district, the petitioners argue that “the interests of the party must at all times stand above any of our interests in conformity with our party constitution.”
The petition is copied to the Secretary General NRM, Chairperson NRM Electoral Commission, Resident District Commissioner Bushenyi, and the Bushenyi District NRM Chairperson.
Efforts to reach Hajji Basajjabalaba for a comment were futile as his known telephone could not be reached by press time.
