Hon. Mary Busingye Karooro Okurut, the minister in charge of General Duties in the office of the prime minister, has received a prestigious award as best woman writer.

Mrs. Karooro received the award on Friday night during the Girls Flourish Awards 2019, at Sheraton Hotel, Kampala. The ceremony was powered by the ministry of Gender and UN Women.

UN Women is the United Nations entity for gender equality and women’s empowerment, working to develop and uphold standards and create an environment in which every woman and girl can exercise her human rights and live up to her full potential.

Minister Karooro, a former literature lecturer, who represents Bushenyi district women constituency in Uganda’s parliament, is a celebrated novelist, play wright, newspaper columnist, and social and political commentator.

She has at several occasions been awarded for her outstanding performance in the development of literature in Uganda. She is the founder of FEMRITE, an indigenous, non-governmental and non-profit making women’s organization publishing, training, and promoting writers.

Her works include Child of a Delegate, The invisible weevil, The Official Wife, Portiphers’s Daughter, The Switch, and a play(The Curse of the Sacred Cow). All this has made her stand out and receive national and international recognition becoming a top notch writer at national and international level.

Mrs. Karooro’s latest publication is UGANDA’S MARCH TO INDUSTRIALIZATION 1986-2040 with a foreword by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
