The COVID-19 pandemic that has held the globe captive since the beginning of this year, resulted in school shut down across the globe. This was done in many countries to prevent fast spreading of the disease. Globally, over 1.2 billion learners were seen out of their classrooms.
E- Learning offers a myriad of benefits including, but not limited to preventing the spread of the COVID-19 disease, learning whatever you want, comfort, self-paced learning, and lower costs as opposed to traditional learning of attending classroom.
In the context of COVID-19, authorities at Nganwa High School, Sheema district, have embarked on a drive for commencement and sustainability of E-learning and advancement of Information and Communication Technology at the school.
He added: “We need a lap top for each class from senior one to senior six. Class teachers will be using these gadgets for e-learning, processing of report cards, etc”
A laptop has already been purchased to assist in the board, PTA, and staff virtual meetings during the COVID-19 period.
The school head teacher, Mr James Hannington Tumwesigye confirmed the development saying that they want enable students continue learning whether they are at school or not and also keep in touch with their teachers when they are away from school.
“By this, teachers will be able to send work and learning modules during the holidays. So far, we have five laptops” said Mr Tumwesigye
In a rural setting, where ICT services are not affordable and there is poor network connection, students and parents see this new development as an impossibility.
Mr Tumwesigye, the head teacher says adoption of E-learning is not a compulsory undertaking for all students.
“We are going to begin with those who can afford and others will join us along the way. We are convinced that after beginning, with or without many students, more parents and students will like it and take E-learning as a worthwhile investment” he told this website.
This website has learned from the head teacher, that a router has been installed at the school to facilitate reliable network connection for E-learning.
The school has a sea of ‘well placed’ old students, who can lead to the realization of the dream.
